Why Porcelain Is Dominating The Dublin Patio Market?
Porcelain paving is quickly becoming the most popular patio material in Dublin, and for good reason:
-
✅ Low maintenance –
Porcelain patios are incredibly easy to maintain compared to traditional stone or concrete. Thanks to their non-porous surface, they don’t absorb dirt, grime, or moss, meaning you won’t need regular sealing or intensive scrubbing. A simple sweep or occasional hose-down is all it takes to keep your patio looking fresh year-round — saving you time, effort, and money.
-
✅ Fade and stain resistant –
In Dublin, where rainfall and damp conditions are frequent, materials that hold up to the elements are a must. Porcelain slabs are UV stable, meaning they won’t fade in direct sunlight, and their dense surface resists stains from fallen leaves, spills, and outdoor furniture. This makes them ideal for maintaining a clean, crisp look through every season.
-
✅ Non-slip surface –
Safety is a priority for any outdoor space. Porcelain tiles designed for external use feature a textured, slip-resistant finish that provides excellent grip, even when wet. Whether you have young children, elderly family members, or host garden parties, porcelain ensures a secure walking surface all year long — even in heavy rain or frosty mornings.
-
✅ Modern, high-end finish –
Porcelain comes in a stunning variety of colours, textures, and finishes — including options that mimic natural stone, wood, or polished concrete. This versatility allows you to create a sleek, contemporary outdoor space that complements your home’s style. A professionally installed porcelain patio doesn’t just improve your garden — it can also boost your property’s value and kerb appeal.

Are porcelain patios suitable for the Irish climate? Absolutely. Porcelain tiles are frost-resistant and have a low water absorption rate, making them ideal for Ireland's wet and variable weather conditions. Their durability ensures they can withstand temperature fluctuations without cracking or deteriorating.
Are porcelain patios slippery when wet? Absolutely not, Porcelain tiles designed for outdoor use come with a R11 anti-slip rating which is one of the highest rating available. This feature ensures safety even when the tiles are wet, making them suitable for areas like pool surrounds and garden patios.
What design options are available with porcelain patios? Porcelain tiles come in a large variety of colours and styles, ranging from slate, travertine, Italian marble, wood plank designs and even granite there is a colour and design to suit every ones taste. Another feature is the multiple sizes available some of the popular ones being 600x600mm, 600x900mm, 600x1200mm which is great as a lot of customers like to mimic the inside kitchen tile on the outside so it creates a nice transition from walking on the inside tile to the outdoor tile.
What is the difference between indoor porcelain tiles and outdoor porcelain tiles? The main and most obvious difference between indoor and outdoor porcelain tiles is going to be the thickness of the tile. Outdoor porcelain is manufactured at a thickness of 20mm where is indoor porcelain is 10mm also outdoor porcelain is R11 anti slip rated which will feel textured to touch where indoor tile will be smooth. Any outdoor tiles will be made to be extra durable and tough to with stand outdoor activity's and withstand more weight and less prone to chipping.
How long does porcelain patio take to install? A porcelain patio installation in Dublin on average can take 1-2 weeks depending on the nature of the design, as every job is different each customer will require a different time frame for the install that time frame can be estimated upon the first inspection. Some other patio features add to the overall time frame of the patio as in most cases the porcelain tile is just one aspect of the patio that runs along side other services that we provide some of them being artificial grass lawn, raised stone flower beds, timber wall cladding, garden walls, plastering/rendering all of which will add time on to the project.
What to look out for when getting a porcelain patio installed? As with every patio the main step is the foundation and making sure there is at least 200mm of hardcore 804 crushed limestone base which is compacted nice and solid for the new patio to be laid on. Once that step is complete your contractor will begin to set levels and heights for the laying of the porcelain, i wanted to point out three main things you should look out for when having a porcelain patio installed, the three points i outlined below can be the difference between a good long lasting job or bad one read on below.
- Is your contractor priming the back of the tiles prior to being laid? what this refers to is priming the porcelain tiles with a slurry primer, the primer can be bought premixed or can be made using a mix of cement and Sbr or cement and Pva, either of them is fine to use as long as the primer is placed on the tile 1-2mm thick and is covering the full back of the tile before making contact with the mortar bed. I cant stress enough that this a crucial step in the laying process as the primer bonds to the tile to mortar bed making it impossible to be pulled apart which is what you want on a porcelain tile installation, we have often been called to jobs where the tiles have all came loose and popped up after customers have paid large amounts of money and it all could of been prevented by using a slurry primer.
- Is your contractor laying your porcelain tiles on full beds of mortar? Just like the primer above another important step in laying a porcelain patio is the cement mortar bed that its laid on. The mortar must be a full bed which basically means that every inch of the underside of the tile hits and makes contact with mortar, the thing to look out for are contractors that use the dot and dab method this involves placing a blob of mortar at each corner of the tile and one in the middle leaving the rest of the tile hollow this means only 20 percent of the tile is making contact with the mortar bed which will cause the patio to not only fail but allow tiles to break due to the other 80 percent being hollow underneath due to a lack or mortar.
- Is your contractor using the correct grout on your new patio? Now its more then likely if the company you have chosen to install your new patio has taken all the correct steps right the way through the installation process that they will use the correct grout on your patio but that's not entirely true. You see some contractors are oblivious to the fact that outdoor porcelain tiles require a waterproof solid joint between the tiles as if water gets under the tile it can cause frost damage and cause tiles to loosen overtime. Some contractors use joint it, easy grout or rompox these are a big no no as they are not designed to be used with porcelain the only long lasting grout that we use on our patios is Flow Point that is specifically made by Ultra scape for porcelain, granite and natural stone a fantastic product that help your patio endure all weather and add to the overall longevity of your patio.
